Import/Export Consultant - Legal

Seeking a full-time (part-time also available) international trade consultant/specialist to assist the firm with day-to-day activities and analysis of issues involving U.S. government import and export control laws and regulations, including, but not limited to, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) customs regulations, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (“ITAR”), the Export Administration Regulations (“EAR”), U.S. Census regulations, and the Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”) sanctions regulations. This position requires an individual that is punctual, professional, detail-oriented, organized, and able to maintain the confidentiality of firm and client information.

The selected candidate may be required to travel to some client locations to provide assistance. An individual with flexibility to work at client’s weeks at a time from time to time is preferred.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Classifying products for import within the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (“HTSUS”) or for export within the Census Schedule B;
  • Classifying products for export within the ITAR U.S. Munitions List (“USML”) and the EAR Commerce Control List (“CCL”);
  • Researching and analyzing information related to government submissions, e.g., tariff exclusion requests, commodity jurisdiction (“CJ”) requests, and commodity classification requests;
  • Assisting with the preparation of submissions to government agencies, e.g., voluntary-self disclosures and export license and agreement requests;
  • Preparing and implementing compliance policies and procedures for firm clients;
  • Drafting and revising import and export manuals and training presentations;
  • Basic legal research with respect to import, export, and trade law;
  • Speaking at trade compliance events;
  • Drafting newsletter articles and client alerts; and
  • Generally assisting attorneys in the day-to-day operation of the firm, including occasional administrative duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • U.S Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Bachelor’s Degree. Years of experience may be a substitute for education
  • Minimum five years’ experience with international trade compliance
  • Customs broker license preferred
