BAN ON THE IMPORTATION OF POULTRY, LIVE BIRDS, EGGS FROM INDIA
USDA Message:
Effective immediately, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and
Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Veterinary Services (VS) is placing a
temporary ban on the importation of poultry and commercial shipments of live
birds, hatching eggs, and unprocessed avian products from India, which is
currently affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) 5N1.
The ban includes shipments that are currently on the water.
Previously, VS has placed bans on the following countries due to the presence
of HPAI H5N1: Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria,
China, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam.
Commercial shipments of processed avian products from these countries must be
accompanied by a VS permit and government certification confirming that products
were treated according to APHIS requirements.
Processed and/or unprocessed avian products from HPAI H5N1 affected countries
will not be permitted to enter in passenger baggage.
U.S. origin pet birds and performing birds will be allowed to return from
these countries upon entering one of three USDA Quarantine Centers for 30 days.
